One of us having settled in US, we know how difficult it is find our Indian fishes here. The names are enough to confuse us and also how good it will be to get a dictionary about them. The king fish, cat fish or many others have lots of varieties which may vary from country to another depending on the waters. So here is what we think will help, names of famous fishes and crustaceans,
Vanjaram - Seer Fish
Vavvaal - Pomfret
Malabar Trevally - Parai
Tuna - soorai
Barracuda - Seela
Seabass - koduvai
Shark - Sura
Anchovies - Nethili
Smelts - variety of nethili(bigger in size)
Cat fish - keluthi meen
Red snapper variety- sankara, kondal varieties
Butter fish - viral meen
Ribbon fish - vaalai
Shrimp/prawn - Iraal
Squid - Oosi Kanavai
Cod - Panna
Indian Halibut- Pothal
Crab - Nandu
Lobster - Singa Iraal
Mackeral - Kumla
Oyster/clam - Chippi
Sardines - Chaali
Tilapia - Jilebi meen, Kari meen, Neyi meen
Parrot fish - killi meen

ReplyDeleteI always look for catfish name- never knew it. For smelts what i get here is "Keejagan"- The bigger nettli is called "rama nettili".
